ABSTRACT:
Play is an essential and natural activity of childhood that plays a vital role in the overall development of a child. It contributes to physical growth by improving motor skills, coordination, strength, and balance. It also supports cognitive development by enhancing thinking, reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and language skills. Emotionally, play helps children express their feelings, reduce stress, and develop coping mechanisms, while socially it promotes interaction, sharing, cooperation, and relationship-building. Through play, children also develop creativity, imagination, confidence, and independence, which are important for healthy personality development. In healthcare settings, particularly in paediatric nursing, play becomes an important therapeutic tool. Hospitalization and medical procedures often create fear, anxiety, and emotional distress in children. Therapeutic play is a structured and purposeful form of play used by nurses to prepare children for procedures, reduce fear, and help them understand their treatment in a simple and non-threatening way. It encourages children to express their emotions, improves communication between the child and healthcare providers, and promotes cooperation during care and treatment. Activities such as role play with dolls, medical toys, storytelling, and distraction techniques help in making the hospital environment less frightening and more familiar. Overall, play and therapeutic play are essential components of holistic child care. They not only support normal growth and development but also play a significant role in emotional healing and adaptation during illness and hospitalization. By reducing anxiety, promoting understanding, and enhancing emotional well-being, therapeutic play improves the quality of care and helps children achieve better recovery and adjustment in healthcare settings.
